As many as one in ten people has a disability.
Many young and energetic people with disabilities are forced to live in nursing homes and other institutional settings, or with parents who are becoming too old to care for them, because they lack the financial means, skills, knowledge or encouragement necessary to live independently in the community.
Co-op Initiatives' Independent Living Program works with people to plan for independent living.
Most people need supporters in their lives. Our Independent Living Program staff work with people to put a support team in place. We help to clarify vision of where they want to live, and analyze income sources to assess the effect of housing on their benefits. We also explore a variety of adaptive equipment to meet individual needs.
After moving in, the Independent Living Program staff offer planning services on an as-needed basis. Our Home of Your Own Program also sponsors quarterly post-purchase meetings to share information on home maintenance, budgeting and support issues.
